Le jeune flâneur’s self portrait inverts subject and background, inserting the photographer and the viewer into intimate voyeuristic contact with this contemplative lady in Paris.

What’s on Your Desk This Morning?

I meant to post this earlier. In the mean time morning’s somehow, almost imperceptibly, slipped into afternoon. So, what’s on your desk this afternoon?

Our Dock House from Essex Ferry Landing

I took this photo a day or two before they closed the ferry. I was sitting in my car, waiting to be ferried across Lake Champlain to Charlotte, Vermont.

Lamy on a January Evening, 2010

Lamy, New Mexico

This evocative image, created by Gene Aker, a friend and former colleague in Santa Fe, transforms a lonely road in Lamy, New Mexico into a quasi-inebriated dreamscape. Or maybe a stormy sunset when the skies are tinted with soot from forest fires? Gene explains how he created the image: “shot old school. 5×7 Korona camera (100 years old). Hp5 sheet film, D76 developer… I selenium toned the print. Then when I scanned it, I hit the sepia button — then cranked up the shadows to darken. Everything digital is a lie! but the print looks pretty cool–a 5×7 contact print.”

Black Sheep

Today’s National Geographic Photo of the Day, though an unstaged, unanticipated photo opportunity, is oh-so-compelling. Admit it? Or not? We’ve all felt that way. Probably looked that way too!

Bear Claw Damage

Beech bark damage, inflicted most likely by a bear. We saw many similar marks during our Champlain Area Trails snowshoe outing at Poke-o-Moonshine’s Lost Oak Valley this past Saturday. Much damage, but no bears! (I’ve posted additional photographs on flickr if you look for the Lost Oak Valley set…)

Turkey Wing Prints

Turkey Winter WingsWhile cross-country skiing in the back meadow, I snapped this image with my Blackberry. Not a great shot, but it captures the gist… These are the patterns imprinted in the snow when a couple of turkeys took flights. Griffin and I had been following the turkey footprints throughout our adventure — probably close to a dozen birds — and I had noticed several coyotes tracks weaving among the turkey tracks from time to time. No doubt the turkeys and the coyotes had wandered through at different times. But seeing that this area where all of the turkeys suddenly took flight suggests that they just may have been startled by a couple of hungry coyotes. Or maybe they just heard us coming?

Long Way Down

Dramatic bridge picStumbled across this dramatic bridge photograph on Reddit this afternoon. Spectacular!

India Snapshots

India Pics

Fresh back in the USA after 2.5 weeks in India. Still sorting out the culture shock, etc. Soon Susan and I will start sorting through hundreds of photos, but in the meanwhile here are several daily candids snapped on my Blackberry to keep family and friends in the loop.

Rosslyn Dockhouse in November

Day actually became colorful a little later on, but these tones were almost richer than the bright blues and yellows of high noon. Any idea what’s missing from this photo?Rosslyn dockhouse

Docks and boat hoist are in. Doug and I spent the better part of Sunday morning seeing to that awkward task. And then changing out the moorings for winter. And neither of us fell into the drink!

But docks, boat hoist and moorings aren’t the only missing pieces of this puzzle…
